It works wonderfully, because the learning curve is perfect and there is a wonderful balance happening behind the scenes that you barely notice.
#E XS THE TALOS PRINCIPLE HOW TO#
You have to figure out how to use the various devices thrown at you throughout the game. The game doesn't hold your hand at all, either. The point is, the fact that the story itself is a puzzle is fascinating, and I'm curious if there are any other games that have done this in the past. I don't want to spoil any of the story, so I won't elaborate on these things. Then there's the magical voice in the sky, Elohim. There are various hologram-looking pieces scattered about the world that reveal voice-logs for you to listen to. Computer terminals provide documents for you to read, and a snarky AI that challenges everything you do. You have to go out of your way to find various things in order to figure it out for yourself. The game doesn't just tell you the story as you progress through the game. In addition to this, the story deals with a lot of philosophical themes and will constantly have you questioning what you do. What's really interesting about this game though is how the story itself is a puzzle as well. So while the puzzles are separate, they kind of come together in the end. You have to fit these sigils together on a rectangular grid in order to open this lock. Once you collect a set of sigils, you use them in a lock. You solve the puzzle, collect the sigil (tetris piece-looking thing), and move on to another puzzle. Of course there are a bunch of puzzle games in the indie community, but this game was made by Croteam creators of the Serious Sam franchise.Įach puzzle is sort-of separated in its own little, boxed-in area. You don't see very many of these anymore. In fact, I think it does quite a bit differently, and I'm curious if its success if correlated to just how much it strays from the rather generic formula of most AAA games coming out today.įor starters, it's a puzzle game. It's a puzzle game the likes of the Portal series, but does a few things differently. Some people are going as far as calling it their game of the year. So, The Talos Principle came out the other day, and everyone who's played it absolutely loves it.
